Halloween costume and party inspiration

Looking for Halloween costume inspiration, or theme inspiration for a Halloween party? A couple of years ago I threw a Halloween party to end all Halloween parties. The theme? Seven deadly sins.

Sure, the outside of the house was covered in cobwebs and spiders and was lit up with eery lights and a smoke machine, the walls and ceilings were covered in black bin bags, and there were cauldrons filled with sweets and other Halloween party props everywhere – but this was no ordinary Halloween party.

The seven deadly sins, also known as the cardinal sins, consist of pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth – and guests had to dress accordingly.

My friends and I created suggestive invitations by writing on the back of polaroid pictures, which we sent via post in black envelopes (so much more fun to receive than your standard Facebook event invite).

Most men turned up as ‘lust’ in feminine lingerie, whilst others turned up in stained pyjamas as ‘sloth’, or wrapped themselves in fake money for ‘greed’. The best costume went to a couple of girls who arrived wearing inflatable Sumo wrestling suits (gluttony).

To maximise space I put a heated marquee in the garden and asked the builders next door to create a temporary stage from left over scaffolding for a live music band. I asked a rugby team to help out with serving drinks and snacks (topless, of course), and organised for a ‘police officer’ (*cough* stripper) to arrive at midnight with a noise complaint.

As for my costume? The girl from Goldfinger, a cross between lust and greed, I had a body painter paint me from tip to toe in gold paint.

Because if you can’t get away with that in your own home, then where can you?!
