Upgrade your bedroom with these stunning design ideas

You don’t need to hire an interior designer to create a sophisticated and grown-up bedroom.

For a high-end looking bedroom, the kind you would expect to find in a fancy hotel or interior designed homes, there are two key rules to swear by; symmetry, and storage. Symmetry instantly makes a room look better – it just does. Having identical bedside tables on either side of the bed, with an identical lamp on each one (like my Palm Springs bedroom moodboard) already goes a long way. And although it might be hard to achieve exact symmetry, you can still aim to keep the room as balanced as possible; for example, if there’s an armchair at one end, you might want to place a dressing table at the other end so that one side doesn’t appear “heavier” than the other. A bit like arranging shelves!

The second rule is storage: the better storage you have, the less clutter there will be and the more elegant and organised the room will appear. Floor to ceiling built-in wardrobes are a great use of space and help create a flush look. Ideally you want to have a dedicated space for everything, so that nothing is cluttering the surfaces. Less is definitely more; shelves with display objects can make a room look busy – a framed picture on the wall is much more restful on the eye.

Stick to those two rules and you’ll already come a long way.

Next you’ll need to upgrade your tatty student digs furniture. Say goodbye to your battered Billy bookcase, Kallax shelving series and sellotaped Ribba picture frames, and say hello to all things velvet, silk, linen, glass, mirrored and bone inlay. It’s time to invest in an affordable painting (browse my favourites under £100 or buy a statement piece), a grown-up bed or statement headboard, potted plant (these faux ones look like the real deal without the maintenance), quality bed linen and some gorgeous bedroom furniture. Accessorise with an acrylic ghost chair or side table, maybe a pop of animal print or some gorgeous wallpaper, and add interest to your walls with an unusual wall display.

I’ve been eyeing up Sweetpea & Willow’s stunning furniture ever since my Black & Gold post, and their gorgeous pieces in my bedroom moodboards below are sure to help you create the ideal retreat you’ll love waking up in every morning—and escaping to at the end of the day.

But first a little bedroom inspiration!
